Overview

Cef-3 400 mg Capsule contains Cefixime Trihydrate, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic used for the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis), typhoid fever, otitis media, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 400 mg once daily or in two divided doses. Duration of treatment varies by infection type and severity, as prescribed by the physician. Can be taken with or without food.

Interaction

Concomitant use with carbamazepine may increase carbamazepine levels. Warfarin anticoagulant effect may be potentiated; monitor INR. Probenecid may increase cefixime plasma levels.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins (due to potential cross-reactivity).

Side Effects

Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain), headache, dizziness, and skin rash. Pseudomembranous colitis is a rare but serious complication.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use during pregnancy only if clearly necessary; considered relatively safe but confirm with a physician. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk — use with caution during breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy, renal impairment (dose adjustment required in severe cases), or gastrointestinal disease. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Cef-3 be taken on an empty stomach?
Yes, it can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal side effects.

Why must the full course be completed?
Stopping antibiotics early can allow surviving bacteria to develop resistance and may lead to relapse of the infection.
