Cefopen IM/IV Injection 2 gm vial

Overview

Cefopen 2 gm/vial contains Cefoperazone Sodium, a third-generation semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. This higher-strength vial is used for serious and severe bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, septicaemia, biliary tract and intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and gonorrhoea caused by susceptible organisms.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 2–12 g/day in equally divided doses every 12 hours for severe infections; higher doses as directed. Administer by IV infusion over 15–60 minutes or by deep IM injection.

Interaction

May potentiate anticoagulant effects of warfarin; monitor PT/INR closely. Concurrent alcohol use within 72 hours may precipitate a disulfiram-like reaction. Do not mix with aminoglycosides in the same infusion.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefoperazone, cephalosporins, or penicillins.

Side Effects

Diarrhoea, injection site reactions, hypersensitivity, and transient liver enzyme elevations. Risk of disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use during pregnancy only if clearly indicated; may be excreted in breast milk.

Precautions and Warnings

Monitor hepatic function in patients with liver disease. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 72 hours after the last dose. Monitor for superinfection with prolonged therapy.

Storage Conditions

Store dry powder below 25°C, away from light. Reconstituted solutions should be used within 24 hours if refrigerated.
