Flucloxacillin is a narrow-spectrum penicillinase-resistant beta-lactam antibiotic. It is highly resistant to staphylococcal penicillinase, making it particularly effective against beta-lactamase-producing Staphylococcus aureus and other resistant staphylococci.

Indications

  • Skin and soft tissue infections caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci
  • Staphylococcal bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis, septic arthritis)
  • Impetigo, cellulitis, furuncles, and wound infections
  • Pneumonia and endocarditis caused by penicillinase-resistant staphylococci

Dosage & Administration

Children <2 yrs: 62.5 mg four times daily. Children 2–10 yrs: 125 mg four times daily. Adults/≥10 yrs: 250–500 mg four times daily. Take 30–60 min before food.

Contraindications & Precautions

  • Hypersensitivity to flucloxacillin, other penicillins, or cephalosporins
  • History of flucloxacillin-associated hepatic dysfunction (cholestatic jaundice)
  • Caution in renal impairment

Side Effects

Common: GI disturbances (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain). Rare: hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria, anaphylaxis), cholestatic jaundice (especially with prolonged use), blood dyscrasias.

Drug Interactions

Warfarin: flucloxacillin may reduce anticoagulant effect — monitor INR. Methotrexate: reduced excretion. Probenecid: increases flucloxacillin plasma levels.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
