Ciprocin 200 IV Infusion

Overview

Ciprocin 200 mg/100 ml IV Infusion contains Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is used in hospital settings for severe infections requiring parenteral therapy including lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, septicaemia, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, and typhoid fever.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 200–400 mg every 12 hours by slow IV infusion over 60 minutes. Dosing based on infection severity and renal function as prescribed. Transition to oral therapy when clinically appropriate.

Interaction

Theophylline levels increased — monitor and adjust dose. May enhance anticoagulant effects of warfarin. NSAIDs may increase CNS stimulation risk. Sucralfate and antacids reduce oral bioavailability (less relevant for IV). Avoid co-administration with QT-prolonging drugs.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones. Avoid in children and adolescents unless no alternative exists. Avoid in patients with history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolones.

Side Effects

Nausea, diarrhoea, headache, restlessness, and injection site reactions. Tendinitis and tendon rupture (especially Achilles), peripheral neuropathy, and CNS effects may occur. QT prolongation is possible.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risk to cartilage development; use only when no safer alternative is available.

Precautions and Warnings

Infuse slowly over 60 minutes to reduce risk of adverse effects. Monitor renal function in patients with impairment. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Watch for signs of tendon pain, especially in elderly patients or those on corticosteroids. Discontinue if CNS symptoms or tendon pain develop.

Storage Conditions

Store at room temperature (15–30°C), protected from light and freezing. Do not use if solution appears cloudy or contains particles.
