Calboral-DX Tablet 600 mg+400 IU

Overview

Calboral-DX Tablet 600 mg+400 IU contains Coral Calcium and Vitamin D3, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source), equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium, and Vitamin D USP 400 IU. The Coral Calcium has a chemical structure very similar to human bone, ensuring better absorption than other calcium sources.

Indications

Calboral-DX is indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, tetany, hypoparathyroidism, and disorders of osteogenesis. It is also used as a supplement for inadequate calcium intake in childhood diet, rickets, pregnancy and lactation, and in elderly patients. Other indications include pancreatitis and as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.

Pharmacology

Calcium is vital to a wide variety of bodily functions, and clinical evidence supports its use for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and associated fractures. Vitamin D aids calcium absorption from the GI tract and stimulates bone formation. Calcium and Vitamin D have synergistic effects on bone growth and in osteoporosis and fracture prevention.

Dosage and Administration

One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water, or as directed by the physician. Taking with a full stomach ensures better absorption.

Interaction

Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium, increasing the risk of hypercalcaemia. Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption. Calcium carbonate may interfere with absorption of tetracycline preparations, which should be taken at least two hours before or four to six hours after calcium intake. Hypercalcaemia may increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides. Oxalic acid and phytic acid-rich foods may inhibit calcium absorption.

Contraindications

Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis, hypersensitivity to any component, severe renal insufficiency, and concomitant digoxin therapy without careful monitoring.

Side Effects

May cause GI irritation and constipation. Hypercalcemia is rare with calcium alone but may occur with large doses in chronic renal failure. Other effects include allergic reactions, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth and drowsiness. Skin rash has occasionally been reported with Vitamin D supplements.

Pregnancy and Lactation

During pregnancy, daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol. Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided during pregnancy. Calcium and Vitamin D3 can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding in case of deficiency, but pass into breast milk, which should be considered when giving additional vitamin D to the child.

Precautions and Warnings

During long-term treatment, serum calcium levels should be monitored along with renal function. Use with caution in patients on cardiac glycosides or diuretics, and in those prone to calculus formation. Use cautiously in renal impairment and in patients with sarcoidosis due to risk of increased vitamin D metabolism.
