Overview
Eredex 5.4 mg Capsule contains Yohimbine Hydrochloride, an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist derived from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. Yohimbine blocks presynaptic alpha-2 receptors, increasing norepinephrine release, which enhances blood flow and sympathetic nervous system activity in peripheral tissues including penile tissue. It is used as an adjunct in the management of psychogenic erectile dysfunction (ED) and may be used in cases of organic ED where other treatments are not suitable.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: 5.4 mg (1 capsule) two to three times daily, or as directed by the physician. Full therapeutic effect may require 4–8 weeks of continuous treatment.
Interaction
Concurrent use with antihypertensive drugs may cause excessive blood pressure changes. Tricyclic antidepressants may enhance yohimbine's effect. Avoid concurrent use with other alpha-blockers or sympathomimetic agents. MAOIs — potential serious interaction; avoid co-administration.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in renal disease, severe hepatic impairment, severe cardiovascular disease, hypertension, psychiatric conditions, history of anxiety or panic disorder, and known hypersensitivity to yohimbine.
Side Effects
Anxiety, agitation, tremor, headache, palpitations, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, nausea, and insomnia. May provoke panic attacks in susceptible individuals.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Not applicable (used exclusively in males). Avoid use in women, particularly during pregnancy.
Precautions and Warnings
Monitor blood pressure during treatment. Not suitable for patients with anxiety disorders, panic disorder, or hypertension. Do not exceed recommended dose. Seek medical advice before use if on antihypertensive or cardiac medication.
Storage Conditions
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does yohimbine help erectile dysfunction?
Yohimbine blocks alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in penile tissue and the central nervous system, reducing sympathetic tone and increasing norepinephrine release, which promotes vasodilation and blood flow to facilitate erection, particularly in psychogenic ED.
Is yohimbine effective for all types of ED?
Evidence is strongest for psychogenic ED; it is less effective for purely organic (vascular or neuropathic) ED; a physician should assess the cause of ED before prescribing yohimbine, as other treatments (PDE5 inhibitors) may be more effective for organic causes.
