Composition
Each softgel capsule contains: Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) 1000mg, standardised to contain 7–10% Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), equivalent to approximately 70–100mg GLA per capsule.
Description and Pharmacology
Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a plant native to North America whose seed oil has been used medicinally in Europe since the 16th century. Femorose Evening Primrose Oil is exceptionally rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, 7–10%) and linoleic acid (LA, ~70%).
Key mechanisms:
- GLA pathway: GLA is rapidly absorbed and directly converts to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) and other prostaglandin precursors, bypassing the rate-limiting delta-6-desaturase enzyme step that is often impaired in conditions such as atopic eczema, diabetes, and ageing. DGLA gives rise to the 1-series prostaglandins (anti-inflammatory).
- Plasma lipid modulation: Improves EFA composition of plasma, erythrocytes, and platelet lipids; increases atocopherol (Vitamin E) levels.
- Breast milk enrichment: Increases total fat and EFA content of breast milk — important for infant brain and retinal development.
- Anti-inflammatory effect: 1-series prostaglandins derived from DGLA counter the pro-inflammatory effects of arachidonic acid-derived 2-series prostaglandins, explaining GLA's efficacy in arthritis, eczema, and PMS.
- Platelet function: Modulates platelet aggregation and thrombosis risk via prostaglandin effects.
Dosage and Administration
Take orally with or after meals:
- Atopic/allergic dermatitis — Adults: 1 capsule twice daily
- Atopic/allergic dermatitis — Children: 1 capsule once or twice daily
- Benign breast disease and mastalgia: 1 capsule 2–3 times daily
- Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): 1 capsule twice daily (morning and night)
- Rheumatoid arthritis: 1 capsule daily, or as directed by the physician
Duration of use: Most clinical studies show benefits after 3–6 months of continuous supplementation. Use as directed by the physician.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to evening primrose oil or any component of the capsule
- Use with caution in patients with seizure disorders — high-dose GLA supplementation may theoretically lower seizure threshold (historical concern; clinical significance at standard doses is uncertain)
Warnings and Precautions
- Do not exceed the recommended dose — overdose may cause loose stools and abdominal pain.
- Store away from direct sunlight and heat — the oil is susceptible to oxidation.
- Patients with bleeding disorders or those on anticoagulant therapy should consult a physician before use (GLA may have mild antiplatelet effects).
Side Effects
Side effects are rare at recommended doses:
- Gastrointestinal: Loose stools, abdominal pain — primarily with overdose or at higher doses
- Headache — occasionally reported
- Nausea — mild and transient
EPO has an excellent safety profile; it has been used widely for decades with no serious adverse effects reported at standard doses.
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants/antiplatelets (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel): Theoretical additive antiplatelet effect — use with caution and inform your physician.
- Phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine): Early case reports suggested a possible increased seizure risk — clinical significance is uncertain. Monitor patients on these drugs.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Pregnancy: EFAs (linolenic acid, GLA, DGLA) are important for foetal development. The WHO recommends that pregnant women obtain 5% of total daily caloric intake from EFAs. Use only under physician supervision during pregnancy — high doses in late pregnancy are not recommended.
Lactation: GLA and DGLA are important components of human breast milk. EPO supplementation may enrich breast milk EFA content. Considered safe during breastfeeding at recommended doses.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the cap tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the strip.
