DESCRIPTION

Iron is the most important constituent of haemoglobin. Iron is needed for haemoglobin to supply oxygen to the tissues.

Every day an average human body requires about 0.7 mg/kg body weight of iron in accordance to its need and maintenance. Iron deficiency is due to poor food, excessive need of iron and excessive blood loss. Without folic acid red blood cell can not be produced in the body and ultimately causes megaloblastic anaemia. An adult requires an average of 200 mcg Folic Acid per day. It is 300 to 400 mcg per day during pregnancy and lactation.

COMPOSITION

Each tablet contains Ferrous Fumarate BP 200 mg (equivalent to 66 mg iron) and Folic acid BP 200 mcg.

INDICATIONS

Excessive menstruation, pregnancy and lactation, bleeding during labour, malnutrition, vitamin deficiency in food, over work, helminthiasis, tuberculosis, continuous bleeding from chronic wound etc.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Adults: One tablet 2-3 times daily.

OR AS DIRECTED BY THE PHYSICIAN.

SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhoea. This problem is reduced by administering the drug during food intake or after food intake.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Megaloblastic anaemia due to Vitamin B12 deficiency. Ferocit is contra indicated to those patients who need repeated blood transfusion.

PRECAUTIONS

Iron salt reduces the absorption of tetracycline if used concomitantly. If two drugs are indicated iron supplement should be administered before 3 hours or after 2 hours of administration of tetracycline. Concomitant administration of iron and magnesium trisilicate containing antacid reduces the absorption of iron.

DRUG INREACTIONS

Concomitant administration of iron salt and Tetracycline, tea and convulsive drugs is restricted.

OVERDOSAGE

Some complications are observed by regular excessive administration of Ferocit such as nausea, abdominal pain, bloody dysentery, narcotizing gastroenteritis etc.
