Overview

Alatrol 10 mg Tablet contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is an antihistamine used for the relief of allergic symptoms such as rhinitis and urticaria.

Indications

Alatrol is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is also indicated for the treatment of the uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria and allergen-induced asthma.

Pharmacology

Cetirizine Hydrochloride is a potent H1 receptor antagonist without significant anticholinergic or antiserotonic effects. At recommended doses, it has minimal drowsiness effect and does not cause behavioral changes. It inhibits the histamine-mediated early phase of the allergic reaction and reduces the migration of inflammatory cells and mediator release associated with the late phase. Peak plasma concentration is reached within one hour; plasma half-life is approximately 11 hours.

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children 6 years and older: 1 tablet daily, or as advised by the physician.

Interaction

No clinically significant drug interactions have been found with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or Hydroxyzine.

Side Effects

The most common side effect is somnolence (drowsiness).

Pregnancy and Lactation

US FDA Pregnancy Category B. No adequate and well-controlled studies exist in pregnant women; use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in human milk, so caution is advised during breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Caution should be exercised when driving a car or operating heavy machinery. Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency, where clearance is reduced and dose adjustment may be needed.
