Hyronate 0.1% Eye Drop (Sodium Hyaluronate)
Manufacturer: Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
Generic Name: Sodium Hyaluronate 0.1% w/v
Therapeutic Class: Ophthalmic Lubricant / Viscosupplement / Artificial Tears
Presentation: 10ml sterile ophthalmic solution
Price: ৳220.00 per 10ml bottle
Indications
Hyronate 0.1% Eye Drop is indicated for:
- Dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) — relief of symptoms including dryness, grittiness, burning, foreign body sensation, and discomfort
- Computer vision syndrome — reduced blinking during prolonged screen use leads to tear film instability and dry eye
- Post-operative ocular lubrication — after refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, cataract surgery), where tear film disruption is common
- Contact lens-related dryness — lubrication for contact lens wearers (compatible with silicone hydrogel and soft contact lenses)
- Environmental dryness — air conditioning, heating, low-humidity environments, smoke exposure
- Ocular surface disease associated with Sjögren's syndrome, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and other conditions
- Adjunctive lubrication in patients using antiglaucoma eye drops, which may be irritating to the ocular surface
Composition
Each ml of Hyronate Eye Drop contains: Sodium Hyaluronate 1mg (0.1% w/v) in a sterile, isotonic aqueous solution. Excipients: sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, sodium chloride, water for injections. Contains no preservatives (or preserved with a surface-active agent depending on pack — check label).
Mechanism of Action
Sodium hyaluronate (HA) is a naturally occurring high-molecular-weight glycosaminoglycan found in high concentrations in the vitreous body of the eye, synovial fluid, and connective tissues. In the eye:
- Tear film stabilisation: HA has unique viscoelastic and mucoadhesive properties — it binds to CD44 receptors on the ocular surface epithelium and mucin layer, dramatically increasing tear film residence time and stability. Unlike simple saline drops, HA is retained on the ocular surface for significantly longer.
- Lubrication and cushioning: High viscosity at rest (gel-like) and low viscosity during blinking (pseudoplastic rheology) mimics the behaviour of natural tears, providing superior lubrication with minimal blurring.
- Corneal epithelial healing: HA promotes corneal epithelial cell migration and proliferation via CD44 receptor signalling — accelerates healing of superficial corneal defects and supports post-surgical recovery.
- Anti-inflammatory: HA has mild anti-inflammatory properties, reducing ocular surface inflammation associated with dry eye disease.
- Osmoprotection: Protects corneal epithelial cells from hyperosmotic stress, which is a key driver of dry eye-related ocular surface damage.
Dosage and Administration
Instil 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed, typically 3–6 times daily or more frequently as directed by the physician or as required for symptom relief.
Technique:
- Tilt the head back; pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket
- Instil 1 drop into the conjunctival sac without touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface
- Blink gently to distribute the drop
- If using other eye drops simultaneously, wait at least 5 minutes between drops — instil Hyronate last if it is not medicated, as it may dilute other medications
- Contact lenses: Hyronate is generally compatible with contact lenses; confirm with the prescribing physician. If unsure, remove lenses before use and reinsert after 15 minutes
There is no maximum daily dose for artificial tear preparations — use as frequently as needed for comfort.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or any component of the formulation
Warnings and Precautions
- For ophthalmic use only — not for injection.
- Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye, eyelids, or any other surface to prevent contamination.
- Discard the bottle within 4 weeks (or as stated on packaging) after first opening — even preserved formulations should not be used indefinitely after opening.
- If symptoms persist or worsen after several days of use, consult an ophthalmologist — persistent dry eye may have an underlying cause requiring specific treatment.
- Preservative-free variants (unit-dose vials) should be used in patients with severe dry eye, contact lens wearers, or those sensitive to preservatives.
Side Effects
Sodium hyaluronate eye drops are extremely well tolerated — adverse effects are very rare:
- Transient blurring of vision immediately after instillation — clears within seconds to minutes; do not drive immediately after instillation
- Mild stinging or burning on instillation — particularly if the ocular surface is severely dry or inflamed
- Hypersensitivity reactions — extremely rare
Drug Interactions
No clinically significant drug interactions have been reported with topical sodium hyaluronate. When used concurrently with medicated eye drops:
- Instil medicated drops first and wait at least 5 minutes before Hyronate to avoid diluting the active medication.
- Hyronate may slightly increase the corneal penetration of concurrently instilled medications due to increased contact time.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Pregnancy: Sodium hyaluronate is naturally present in human tissues and amniotic fluid. Topical ophthalmic use results in negligible systemic absorption. Hyronate is considered safe for use during pregnancy; consult an ophthalmologist if symptoms are severe.
Lactation: Safe for use during breastfeeding — systemic absorption from topical ophthalmic use is negligible.
Special Populations
Diabetic patients: Patients with diabetes mellitus frequently develop dry eye syndrome due to reduced corneal sensitivity (diabetic keratoneuropathy), decreased tear secretion, and conjunctival goblet cell loss. Hyronate is an appropriate first-line treatment for diabetic dry eye. Regular ophthalmic monitoring is part of comprehensive diabetes care.
Elderly: Safe and appropriate for use in older patients, who have higher prevalence of dry eye due to reduced lacrimal gland function.
Paediatrics: Safe for use in children under ophthalmic supervision.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date or more than 4 weeks after first opening.
